The citizens of Durham County deserve better

The citizens of Durham County deserve better.

Everyone deserves the right to be protected and respected and to succeed. Satana’s life as a criminal defense attorney, housing advocate, mother of three, NC native, and Duke Law graduate make her uniquely qualified to lead as our next District Attorney.

For too long the Durham District Attorney’s Office has been driven by a win-at-any-cost culture that prioritizes high conviction rates and harsh sentencing over more effective approaches that are proven to reduce crime. For too long, the priority has been to prosecute poverty in Durham County and to keep the jail full.  For too long, the priority has been to incarcerate rather than educate.  As District Attorney, I will fundamentally change that culture, from a culture of seeking victory for prosecutors to a culture of seeking justice for victims.

We deserve better.

Even in the most difficult mazes, there’s a way to get in and out. But the criminal justice system in Durham County is designed without enough paths that come out of the maze. Our friends, family and neighbors, no matter where they come into the criminal justice system, get on a path that goes straight to prison and has no way out. We know that other routes, such as those to mental health services, addiction services, or juvenile justice services, must be made available, and that these must be two-way paths so that people can get to where they need to go. We need to redesign the justice maze with clear multiple routes so that people can get where they need to go in the most effective and efficient way possible.

My life’s work has been in working to unlock the systems – often the interlocking systems – that limit people’s freedom and opportunities – their way out of the maze.  Whether as a defense attorney, an affordable housing advocate, a parent, or a black woman, I have seen how the current system punishes those of us with the least.

We deserve better.

Progressive change is coming to Durham.  This is the Moment, in this county, for us to move forward in creating a community that values justice and embraces reform.  We cannot be the community we want to be unless we hold our institutions to task for reform.  The District Attorney is a critical player in this change.  More than anyone, the District Attorney has the power and discretion to change how we see each other and our community. By choosing to keep all the people of Durham County safe, the District Attorney can help us refocus our efforts on change.  I have the vision, critical analysis, ethics, leadership skills, courage, perspective and experience that is needed to seize this Moment and to build on this movement.  Despite what is happening at the national and state level, there is tremendous opportunity here in Durham to create a community in which everyone has the opportunity to be safe and free.  I am here to channel that energy for change.

We deserve better.

With a career centered around supporting and defending people and fixing systems that are broken, she will bring this same approach as our District Attorney – making Durham County a fairer, safer, and more vibrant home for everyone.
